Very little, if any, of the game's major beats seem to have any form of impact.

And then the plot reveals just keep coming. And while the characters TALK about not believing it, they just so quickly get over it and accept it. you'd think, at this point, the game would be smarter at how it's delivering what is a rather game/scenario-changing set of reveals but it's just exposition after exposition after exposition.

When you head to the mountains and though it's bad enough you're just sprinting through essentially corridors after corridors after corridors, you arrive at a location that may as well have "PLOT TWISTS HERE" in a big flashing neon sign you go in, literally activate a series of devices that deliver plot exposition.and then you leave, but not before doing the whole corridor-sprinting all over again I don't have a shortage of other games to play through right now, but would like another sci-fi game to sink my teeth into, as it were.

I'm also not really sure if this is something where I'll do both protagonist playthroughs despite hearing recommendations to do both to get 'the full story' (I think some of the appeal of the game to me was seeing it had a female protagonist, so not sure I see myself going through the male protagonist story afterwards), so I hope there's enough in the one playthrough with Kasane that's satisfying story wise (and maybe checking out videos of the other playthrough to see what plot points I missed to fill in some of the blanks).

I am a sucker for sci fi stories in general though (even if I'm not always the biggest fan of 'anime stories' in general), but perhaps this will be up my alley. Feel reviews have ranged from very positive impressions on the story (like Polygon) to a bit more lukewarm at other outlets.

The combat seems pretty fun based off the demo, but I'm hoping the story is something I enjoy (I don't think there was enough of it in the demo for me to predict how I'll enjoy it ultimately). Tempted to pick this up with some soon to be expiring credit I have. Definitely curious to see how the first 5 phases play out for Kasane. Kind of wondering if I should restart as Kasane, since her side of the story seems to be much better for the first time player? I'm in phase 5 of Yuito's story, I think.Į: restarted. That said, I'm a bit of a sucker for twist-filled stories like this, so I'm mostly playing the game for the story right now. I'm personally having some issues coming to terms with it, because of the hard-to-read enemies and combat in general (especially when there's more than 1 enemy), which makes it feel a bit undeserved whenever an enemy gets a hit in.īut I dropped it to easy and I'm enjoying it well enough to continue. RE: all the combat talk, between the dodge having barely any iframes, the Psychokinesis and other powers being absolutely instrumental parts of the combat, some of the slicker moves like in-air dodging and double jumping being locked skills and the loooong animations (and no canceling out of them), I think it's fairly obvious it's definitely not supposed to be like a traditional action game in that sense. There are some minor issues I have with the current implementation, but it's certainly a step above what Cold Steel had for example. It still feels rather MC-centric and counseling-ish, but Yuito/Kasane actually expressing their own thoughts (also voiced) and conversing with the bond character adds a lot (ahem, Rean). One final thought, I think the bond system in SN is my favorite implementation of the Persona social link concept. There really wasn't any room for it.Ĭlocked in at 40 hours.

On one hand, it's a little disappointing, but on the other, it makes sense with how the story played out. With the whole red strings of fate theme going on, I was absolutely certain there was going to be some form of romance, but that got completely turned on its head. I personally wish the epilogue was more of an epilogue, but maybe there's a secret epilogue scene or something once I play Kasane's route. It's a low-hanging fruit that they chose not to go for, so they have my respect for that. I'm pretty happy that all of the bonding events ended on platonic notes except for maybe Hanabi. I don't want to go into detail on my thoughts of the game until I finish Kasane's side, but overall, story ended on a satisfying note, though maybe a bit too safe? It felt like they were trying to be super ambitiuous with all of the random sci-fi elements throw into the plot, but it kind of worked, I suppose.
